Some healthy college habits that all students can practice will make a big difference, if only...
I know, for most of these kids it is the first time on their own, away from parents nagging to do this, and do that. Later, they will appreciate the 'mother knows best' and 'listen to your father' advice."
Still, day in and day out, these kids are under a lot of pressure. They have busy schedules, stressful work loads, and don't sleep enough. They live in close quarters and share way too many personal belongings.
And this all leads to germ spreading and compromised immune systems.
Student can remain independent and still heed good words of wisdom:
Rest. Do not skimp on rest! Not getting enough sleep can cause some serious problems, like lower resistance that results in catching more colds and minor illnesses, and your body not being able to fight off germs as well. Also, stress and even depression are more likely to surface. Low energy and even poor concentration are concerns as well.
Eat well. Fast-food and too much pizza may be quick and even cheap but it is important for the body to eat well. Just like what was taught since grade school, fruits and vegetables should be consumed every day, lean meats, fish, and poultry are better choices that fatty meats. Foods high in calcium, like low-fat dairy products are desirable. Junk food or high fat foods should be avoided, and the same for sugary drinks such as soda pop, juice, sweetened teas or coffees, and sport drinks. If you have trouble acquiring all of the daily nutrients needed, it is wise to supplement with vitamins and minerals.
Exercise. An important part of staying healthy is getting enough exercise, including all three main types. Aerobic exercise strengthens your heart and lungs. Strengthening exercise tones and builds muscles and bone mass. Stretching exercises improve your flexibility or range of motion. Even if you feel you do not have time, if you try and carve out a little time somewhere and give it a try, chances are you are going to feel the benefits of increased time which makes you more productive in other areas. That will in turn create the time so that you can continue your exercise routine. This is proven to work and definitely worth the benefits of feeling better and building future good health.
Rest. Eat well. Exercise. These need to be given priority right up there with your studies. Mom and Dad will be proud and you will feel great!
